Katherine
Spalding’s artwork and sculpture is recognized and collected by
major national and international corporations, private collectors,
museums and naturalist organizations around the world. Well known
for her ability to capture intricate details in both her paintings
and bronzes, Katherine is perhaps most famous for her portrayals of
wildlife in their natural habitats. Growing up in south Florida as
the daughter of two architects, Katherine began drawing as a child,
and felt a keen appreciation of the natural world which surrounded
her. This lifelong love of nature has led to extensive travel for
both study and work in such exotic locales as the Amazon, the
Faukland Islands, Tasmania, New Zealand, Australia, Antarctica, and
Western Europe.
To develop her artistic skills, Katherine studied drawing and
etching at New York’s Pratt Institute and at Cornell University with
courses in drawing and lithography. She also studied engraving and
bronze casting at the University of Iowa and engraving at the
acclaimed Atelier Garrigues in France. One of her most monumental
works is “Continuum of Life” a watercolor executed as a 124-foot
original at Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. This
vivid portrait of the wildlife and habitat which is one of southwest
Florida’s greatest treasures took more than six months to complete.
Folios of the 30 artist’s proofs of the project were donated to both
the Library of Congress and the State of Florida.
In 1986, Katherine turned her full attention to bronze sculpting
where she uses the centuries old “lost wax” technique. She has
completed several large works including a 50-foot arching display of
flying fish which graces a fountain at the famed Atlantis Resort
Casino. |
