WHO AM I?
My name is Leena Pekkalainen and I paint horse portraits. If I
really try to remember how it all started, I think it happened when
I was three years old. I was walking in a park next to the Turku
Cathedral with my Mom. A police horse was walking towards us and I
got all excited. I was probably already climbing halfway up its
front leg before Mom came to rescue (mine or the horses, I'm not
sure).
In my opinion
beauty, strength and sensitivity combine beautifully in a horse – no
point in telling me that a horse has only one expression. There is a
different personality looking through the eyes of each and every
horse.
Of course I've
been painting other animals as well – I've loved dogs as long as
horses and I've always had cats. But first and foremost I consider
myself an equine artist.
Painting horse
portraits is an excellent excuse to meet all kinds of horses (I am a
horseless person, unfortunately). One of the great plus-points in
painting horses are the horse owners I have had the opportunity to
meet and become friends with. I have yet to find the horse owner to
whom his/her horse would be "just an animal". Most talk about their
horse like a dear friend – and friendship is what it is all about,
isn't it? And when I talk with a person whose horse has already
died, tears are often near for both of us.
A portrait is a
beautiful memory of a dear friend. If you are interested in
commissioning one or are otherwise interested in horse art, you are
welcome to read my homepage. I will update my page with more
pictures so come and check out every now and then what I have
painted. You can reach me by email or phone (I cannot always answer
the phone so the best way to reach me is by email). I speak fluent
English (and manage to get by in Swedish too).
