Wood Burning - By Chris Matthews

I began drawing horses as soon as I could hold a crayon and have worked in many mediums over the years. In 2001 I was given a pyrographic wall hanging as a gift and a new door opened for me. Modern burning machines enable incredible refinement and detail in the finished piece that was not possible thirty years ago. Different shades and effects are achieved by varying the burning pen temperature, pen tip used, and drawing speed.

I like the challenge that comes with the uniqueness of each piece of wood. Learning about different woods (color, grain & hardness) has been an education in itself. Even the milling year and sap content affects the degree of heat to use and the final look. Most "new" wood is being milled from younger trees with looser grain, so my hunt for the preferred "old" wood takes me from antique shops to buildings being torn down and everywhere in between. The Warrior is on a door that was milled over 60 years ago. Old wood is getting to be a rare resource and I consider it a treasure.

The jewelry is a recent development that allows me to integrate my love of glass and stone beads. Burning on functional objects is especially fun. This includes cups, bowls, cabinet doors, boxes, tables, and other furniture items. I'm designing a storage cabinet for my horse trailer that will be decorated with Arabians and an area saddle maker wants me to burn a saddle. Adding color is another avenue to be explored.
