IMPERIAL EGYPTIAN STUD SAYS GOODBYE
(taken in part from www.imperialegyptianstud.com)

When Pyramid Society Trustee, Barbara Griffith and her late husband, Doug, purchased their first gelding sight unseen from an Arabian Horse World ad, they had recreation and some fun in mind. Little did they know that those humble aspirations would evolve into Imperial Egyptian Stud of Parkton, Maryland. Now sadly, after nearly 40 years of breeding world-class Egyptian Arabian horses, Imperial Egyptian Stud will be closing its doors.

After their initial purchase of the gelding, Doug and Barbara found themselves falling under the spell of Arabian horses. "We had fun competing in local shows, enjoying the people we met, and we fell in love with the Arabian. It wasn't long before we wanted more, and better," she says.

The 1971 U.S. National Champion Mare *Serenity Sonbolah (Sameh x Bint Om El Saad), captivated the Griffiths with her beauty, and convinced them to change direction and breed straight Egyptian Arabians.

Four major Egyptian bloodlines served as foundation for the Imperial program: Nazeer (Mansour x Bint Samiha by Kazmeen), a guiding influence for Egyptian breeders worldwide; Halima ( Sheikh El Arab x Ragia by Ibn Rabdan), the dam of *Ansata Ibn Halima; Moniet El Nefous (Shahloul x Wanisa by Sheikh El Arab), the renowned "Queen of the EAO"; and Sameh (El Moez x Sameera by El Dere), a superb broodmare sire and chief stallion at the Egyptian Agricultural Organization.

To quote Barbara Griffith: "Successfully breeding Arabian horses is a long-term commitment, so you must do your homework before rushing out and buying horses that may not suit your ultimate goal. Always buy the very best you can afford. It is far more cost-effective to buy one outstanding mare, for example, than an entire herd of mediocre horses. In the end you will spend more on maintenance, only to find it's quite difficult to market lesser-quality individuals.

"Identify your breeding goals. Then study the pedigree of the horse you're considering and make the effort to see them in person. Depending on a video to make an evaluation may result in overlooking problems, such as a difficult temperament.” "Here is the hardest part," Barbara continues, "try not to fall in love with your foals. To achieve success as a breeder you must sell your very best. Horses like Imperial Imdal, Imperial Sonboleen, Imperial Phanilah, and *Pharrah weren't easy to part with."

"One hundred years from now I hope that the blood of Imperial-bred horses will have helped shape the straight Egyptian horse of the future. I would like it to be said that I stayed true to the original vision of the authentic Arabian horse. If that's an inspiration to future breeders to preserve and protect these wonderful animals - better still." Barbara Griffith, Imperial Egyptian Stud.

EGYPTIAN HORSE DAY IN MAY
Egyptian Horse Day in May is back again! This exciting outreach program targets the public and local media by unifying Pyramid Society members across the nation. Members will sponsor, at their farms, a special day of education, fun, and opportunity to meet the Egyptian Arabian horse. “Meet us in May for Egyptian Horse Day—Join us in June at the Egyptian Event” is the slogan and press releases will be sent to local media to promote this activity. Regional representatives are challenged to help organize and develop this concept within their region.
Saturday, May 12th is the chosen date, however other dates in May can also be selected to suit an individual or group’s needs. Regardless, everyone is encouraged to target May l2th to take advantage of press releases and overall unity, date, and purpose. As in the past, if you plan to sponsor an Egyptian Horse Day activity, please contact The Pyramid Society so we can help get the word out and send you promotional materials.

NEW BOOK NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH THE PYRAMID SOCIETY
The Arab Horse by Peter Upton is now available through The Pyramid Society. This book provides a complete record of all the desert-bred horses imported into Britain after Padischah, from whom all present day purebred Arab horses descend. Peter Upton provides a narrative history of the desert journeys of those early British enthusiasts who went in search of horses suitable for shipping back to Britain, most notably Major Roger Upton, Wilfrid Scawen and Lady Anne Blunt (founders of the famous Crabbet Stud in 1878), and the Honourable Miss Dillon. Thereafter, and often in the words of the original importers, the author gives detailed descriptions of the eighty-six horses who have lines existing to this day. There follow detailed tables of descent of mares and stallions, and sections on Bedouin horse breeders, the origins of the Arab horse, and the development of strains.
Lavishly illustrated with 60 full-page color portraits of horses by the author, and color reproductions of famous paintings of Arab horses by Wootton, Herring, Stubbs, Landseer and others, and with 160 black and white and sepia photographs, sketches and etchings, this revised and expanded edition of The Arab Horse will delight and inform all those with an interest in this most beautiful breed. This book, which is sure to appeal to all Arabian enthusiasts, is now available. The cost is $71.00 plus s/h.

IMPERIAL TENT SYNONYMOUS WITH THE EGYPTIAN EVENT AND NOW A PERMANENT PART OF THE EVENT!
For many, when the Egyptian Event is mentioned several common images come to mind. Those memories might include the stunning horses, familiar faces, and perhaps a barn party at Imperial Egyptian Stud, adjacent to their familiar and prominent authentic tent. It gives us great pleasure to announce that Barbara Griffith of Imperial Egyptian Stud located in Parkton, Maryland, has generously donated this tent to The Pyramid Society, making it permanently synonymous with the Egyptian Event. Beginning this year, look for the tent to play host to several new activities at the Event, and “Thank You” again to Imperial Egyptian Stud!

PYRAMID SOCIETY MEMBER WINS NATIONAL PBS AWARD FOR EGYPTIAN ARABIAN DOCUMENTARY
Pyramid Society member Christine Amerman has brought national attention to Egyptian Arabians with her documentary, “Life with Passion: Raising Egyptian Arabian Horses”. On Friday, January 26, 2007, the PBS’ National Educational Television Association (NETA) announced that “Life with Passion” was the recipient of its 2007 Best Biography Documentary Award. “The recognition by NETA is one of the most significant awards “Life with Passion” could receive,” stated Jason Parmer, co-founder of Apparel Arabians (www.apparelarabians.com). Apparel Arabians is Amerman’s vision for a horse-focused branch of the multi-media firm, Apparel Studios (www.apparelstudios.com). Parmer continues to say, “It's an extremely well-told story that has captured peoples' emotions.”
“Life with Passion” is a beautifully told story intertwining the rich heritage of Egyptian Arabian horses with the lives of the two women who raise them, Judy Sirbasku and Shawn Crews, on the world-famous farm, Arabians, LTD., in Waco, Texas. Amerman directed and produced the 30-minute documentary for air on Central Texas PBS affiliate KWBU, while she was a Master’s student at Baylor University. Since its broadcast, it has garnered much attention, including winning a Telly last fall in the highly competitive documentary category. The Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions.
Arabians, LTD. owner Judy Sirbasku noted, “Christine's respect for her subject is admirable. I rarely allow interviews as so rarely does the article reflect my true expressions, but Christine has great intuition.” General Manager, Shawn Crews agrees. “There are few words to describe how the production "Life with Passion" affected me,” she said. “Christine captured on film the emotion that every horse person has but cannot adequately describe to others.” “The passion these women have for these noble creatures is palpable,” executive producer for KWBU Joani Livingston says. “An amazing visceral connection occurs with a well told story and gorgeous photography. Christine squarely hit the mark.”
