VESICULAR STOMATITIS DETECTED IN ARIZONA AND NEW MEXICO
COUNTY IN TEXAS ADDED - Click here for pdf
According to a Memorandum released on May 3, 2005, by Dr. Robert Stout, Kentucky State Veterinarian

Vesicular Stomatitis (VS) was detected in an equine animal residing on a single premise in Maricopa County, Arizona (the south-central portion of the state and home to Phoenix). In addition to Maricopa County, Arizona, the New Mexico counties of Grant, Hidalgo and Luna are also embargoed areas and all livestock (including equine), wild and exotic animals are currently prohibited from entry into Kentucky from these designated areas.

Non-Embargoed Areas of a VS Positive State Allowed restricted entry

In addition to the entry requirements found in 302KAR20:040 – Entry into Kentucky, all livestock (including horses), wild and exotic animals originating from the non-embargoed areas of a state having confirmed cases of VS are required to meet the following conditions prior to entering Kentucky.

(1) Be tested and found negative to VS using the C-Elisa Test with the sample collected during ten (10) day period prior to the animals’ entry into Kentucky.

(2) Have an entry permit issued by the State Vet’s office recorded on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. Permits will be issued Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm EDT.

(3) Be accompanied by a Cert. Of Vet. Inspection indicating that examination of the animals occurred during the five (5) day period prior to arrival in Kentucky, verifying the animals did not originate from a premise or area under quarantine or on one which VS had not been diagnosed in the past 30 days or from an embargoed area restricted from entry into Kentucky.

Although there are no states currently considered to be bordering a designated VS Affected Area, we are urging everyone planning to ship horses to Kentucky from areas possibly affected by VS to frequently check the state’s website: www.kyagr.com for updated information on VS and for complete compliance of Kentucky’s regulations. This will not only ensure the safety of everyone’s animals, but will also eliminate the possibility of being turned away at Kentucky’s borders.

Again, we urge you to check the website www.kyagr.com for frequently updated information.

Sincerely,
The Egyptian Event Show Committee

2006 U.S. ARABIAN NATIONALS UPDATE FROM AHA
On April 5, 2005, a letter was written to AHA by Deborah Burda, the Director of Sales and Marketing at the Kentucky State Fair and Exposition Center (KFEC). The letter served as a "Notice of Construction" mandated by the facilities contract mutually agreed upon by KFEC and AHA. The letter stated that the Kentucky State budget was official and that renovation of the East Wing and East Hall would commence April, 2006, with a construction timeframe through November, 2007.

The East Wing houses 480 premium stalls and the entire Commercial Exhibit area, providing a critical space for the U.S. Nationals.

Additionally, the construction occurring at the East Wing during the 2006 U.S. Nationals would make the main thoroughfare for foot and auto traffic that borders the shed row barns inaccessible. This restricted access would further limit ease of movement at the show.

Alternatives that face the U.S. National Show Commission include:
Moving the premium stalling into tents
Locating all Commercial Exhibits in the South Wing
Looking for another venue
The U.S. National Show Commission is currently exploring various options including staying in Louisville with the restrictions, moving the show to Albuquerque or moving the show to Tulsa.

The U.S. National Show Commission is committed to handling this situation in a spirit of open communication and will make a concerted effort to keep AHA members apprised as decisions are made. Providing the highest quality U.S. Nationals experience for every owner, exhibitor and guest will be paramount throughout our decision-making process.

Respectfully,

The U.S. National Show Commission
Lance Walters, Chair
Cindy Clinton, Vice-Chair
Phil Bourgeois

The 2005 Qatar International Arabian Horse Show - Egyptians shining in the Limelight
Photos and text: Judith Wich
Some of the finest Arabian horses in the Middle East took part in the tough competition of the 14th annual Qatar International Arabian Horse Show. From February 21 – 23, 2005 the show attracted over 100 horses, which competed in front of a very international audience. This event was was held in conjunction with the Qatar International Equestrian Festival, which also included several important races at Doha’s new state-of-the-art racetrack. Expertly organized by the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, guests were treated to a multitude of exciting impressions . Open house presentations at five of Qatar’s best-known stud farms offered a welcomed look into different breeding programs. After the show, everyone was invited on a cruise around the harbor in a traditional “dhow”-boat. Spectacular views of endless dunes stretching under a bright sky could be experienced during a guided tour to the Qatari desert.

The show itself spread over three exciting days and was judged by Dr. Manfred Neubacher (Austria), Mrs. Marie Wabbes (Belgium), Mr. Richard Philstrom (France), Mr. Holger Ismer (Germany), Mrs. Christina Wale (Sweden) and Mrs. Renata Schibler (Switzerland).  Egyptian Arabians again had a tremendous presence in the winners' circle and included the following Champions and Reserves:

  • Junior Champion Filly: Nadrah Al Rayyan (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Ansata Nefer Isis), straight Egyptian

  • Junior Reserve Champion Filly: Dorar (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Belquis Al Nasser),
    straight Egyptian

  • Junior Champion Colt: Al Zeer Al Rayyan (Alidaar x RN Farida), straight Egyptian

  • Senior Reserve Champion Mare: Johara Al Naif (Ansata Shalim x Al Johara),
    straight Egyptian

  • Senior Champion Stallion: Escape Ibn Navaronne-D (AS Sinans Pasha x Navaronne P), Egyptian – related

  • Senior Reserve Champion Stallion: Jandeh Al Naif (Ansata Shalim x Ansata Nile Gypsy), straight Egyptian

TSUNAMI RELIEF AUCTION RECAP
Thanks to the generosity of the stallion owners, without whom this auction would not have been possible, I am very pleased to report that the tsunami relief auction raised $62,254.00. These funds will go to the Save The Children Federation, designated for the children of the tsunami disaster. I would like to thank, as well, all the mare owners who participated in the auction and bought the breedings. It was heartening to see how our Arabian community came together for this cause. Last, but certainly not least, my thanks and gratitude to Scott Bailey who created the beautiful auction website, kept this cause in front of his many subscribers and was always there with help and invaluable advice.
Bless you all!
Beverly Sziraky

Ansata Iemhotep Relocates Internationally
On February 20, Ansata Iemhotep, the mares Ansata Nile Lace, Ansata Mariha, Ansata Anisah, and the yearling colt, Ansata Mubarriz departed for Sharjah via United Arab Emirates cargo aircraft. A new straight Egyptian breeding program will be launched by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, the eminent historian and author, who has made Sharjah the memory of the Emirates and is devoted to furthering education, art, and culture about the Arabian horse in the Arabian Gulf and the Arab world. A magnificent new equestrian center has recently been constructed and his new palace contains modern stables where he can enjoy his horses “hands-on” daily. An up-to-date veterinary clinic was also built to provide all aspects of health care for the horses. While the Al Qassimi stables have maintained a few straight Egyptians, including such famed Egyptian Event winners, the late Farid Nile Moon, and his stable mate Desiree, His Highness’s declaration to set up a specific straight Egyptian program is a welcome addition to the outstanding straight Egyptian farms already established in the region.

EGYPTIAN HORSE DAY IN MAY
Egyptian Horse Day in May is back again! This exciting outreach program targets the public and local media by unifying Pyramid Society members across the nation. Members will sponsor, at their farms, a special day of education, fun, and opportunity to meet the Egyptian Arabian horse. “Meet us in May for Egyptian Horse Day—Join us in June at the Egyptian Event” is the slogan and press releases will be sent to local media to promote this activity. Regional representatives are challenged to help organize and develop this concept within their region.

Saturday, May 14th is the chosen date, however other dates in May can also be selected to suit an individual or group’s needs. Regardless, everyone is encouraged to target May l4th to take advantage of press releases and overall unity, date, and purpose. As in the past, if you plan to sponsor an Egyptian Horse Day activity, please contact The Pyramid Society so we can help get the word out and send you promotional materials.

Visit the Egyptian Horse Day page for more information about what is occurring in your region!
