FESTIVAL OF THE ARABIAN HORSE - SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA,
SEPTEMBER 25, 2004

IMPORTANT NOTE:  THIS ACTIVITY HAS BEEN CANCELLED! FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE CONTACT THE EVENT NUMBER BELOW

A group of southern California Arabian horse owners are staging a promotional event September 25 from 1 to 4pm titled the “Festival of the Arabian Horse.” It will include a demonstration involving 20 horses, a commercial vendor area, guest speakers and a thorough introduction to the world of Arabian horses. Most notably, it will all take place at one of the country’s most beautiful Arabian horse facilities, Ventura Farms in Thousand Oaks.

Festival organizer Debra Nowak of Abraxas Arabians is incorporating local stallions and their get demonstrating the diversity of riding disciplines, from western to racing. Participants will pay a fee for showcasing their horse and be afforded exhibit space and ring time. A group of Egyptian Arabian owners is refurbishing the former arena decorations from past Egyptian Event West shows to decorate the exhibition area and welcome tent at the Ventura Farms event. Also included will be a hospitality tent with a large-screen television displaying farm and stallion videos. Sponsors are also being solicited through a regional direct mailing to help offset the cost of the event. Participants may exhibit their farms in the commercial bazaar, or for a lesser fee, place farm literature in the 'welcome' tent.

The SoCal event will target local non-horse print media, as well as a mail invitations to AHA’s new list of website visitors, according to Mrs. Nowak. For further information call the event’s toll-free promotional number at (951) 926-6763.

Straight Egyptian Wins Israel's Breeders Cup Champion Mare Title
Straight Egyptian HF Aset (Ansata Shah Zahir X Bint Bint Pasha), owned by Ronen and Klarit Wolf of Wolf Arabians located in Kfar Kish, Lower Galilee, Israel and Mr. Hassan Abu Ahmad and bred by Sue Burnham and Joan Skeels of Hope Farm Arabians located in Cove, Arkansas, has won Israel’s Breeders Cup Champion Mare title, winning both the Breeders Cup halter title and the semi-final and final on the race track. Until three month ago, Aset was a beautiful happy pasture broodmare that had been exported from the US to Israel by Wolf Arabians & Mr. Hassan Abu Ahmad as an additional broodmare to their herd, to be bred to their stallion HF Darius (Ansata Hejazi X Mareeneh).

Being driven by their partner and Aset's athletic appearance, the Wolfs took the challenge and decided to register Aset in Israel’s Breeders Cup. This competition uniquely combines a Halter competition, which was judged by Mr. Willie Poth of France, with a racing competition.
It was a completely new experience to both Aset, who at eight years of age had never felt a saddle on her back, and for the Wolfs who had been involved in the Straight Egyptian equine industry for over 8 years but had never participated (or intended on participating) in races or other sports competitions with their horses.

Aset took the Breeders Cup competition by storm, winning her halter class, Best Mare in Show, and then, at 8 years of age, racing for the first time in her life in the Breeders Cup semi-finals against some of the best racing mares in Israel and winning! As the horses left the gate in the semi-finals, Aset tripped, however, driven by her fighting spirit, she closed the distance and passed the leading group on the outside of the track to win her first and only race.

With only three weeks until the finals, the Wolfs realized that Aset had suffered a fore leg injury due to tripping at the gate. It quickly became clear that Aset’s participation in the finals was questionable. The mare spent the next two weeks resting and with a week left until the finals, their vet approved her participation in the race.
As they arrived at the Breeders Cup finals, the Wolfs were extremely apprehensive, while Aset seemed happy and excited. To the astonishment and delight of her owners, and as a true testament to the versatility of the Egyptian Arabian horse, Aset had an even better race and won with a huge lead!

THE 2004 EGYPTIAN EVENT—IN YOUR OWN WORDS
As the post Event surveys begin pouring into our office, we thought that it was a good time to take a preliminary look at how people felt about this year’s Egyptian Event. We are so pleased with the volume of responses we have already received and with the overwhelmingly positive feelings about the 2004 Event. Here is a brief sampling of what people are saying.

It seems that this year’s Egyptian Breeders’ Challenge was a huge success. Respondents felt the program was exciting, and specifically, that this year’s breeding auction was wonderful. So exciting was the EBC Auction that one person felt that we should “Have wine and prozac available for the stallion owners.” We’ll work on that one!!!

Other popular areas included the Stallion Showcase and Performance Pyramid. In particular, Monday morning’s clinic with Martha Murdoch received rave reviews. One participant wrote, “Awesome… Martha Murdoch was incredible. I learned so much. It was like having 10 lessons in one.”

Through the surveys we have received thus far, we now know that web-savvy members want to see more pictures from the Event on the website. Prior to the Event, most internet visitors were looking for updates on the Texas Embargo, while after the Event most visitors sought class results.

We have heard loud and clear that your least favorite aspect of the 2004 Egyptian Event was the heat. We will keep our fingers crossed for perfect weather next year! As for what you liked most about the show, the items listed most often included the Stallion Showcase, the EBC auction, the people, and of course, the horses! Interestingly, and as a true testament to how differently people view the Event, one person felt that the Event lasted too long, while for several others, their least favorite thing was that it ended.

A “thank you” to everyone who has taken the time to complete and return their surveys. If you have not yet filled out your survey, there is still time! Please get it back to us as soon as possible (deadline August 13) as your input helps us shape the future. We will wrap this summary up with one of our favorite comments. “I would like to say the Event is what I look forward to every year. I am hooked, your show is great!”

THE PYRAMID SOCIETY STAFF SPOTLIGHT
When it comes to managing the finances of our organization, we are in good hands with Nancy Koons. Nancy, who grew up in Bloomington, Indiana knew early that she had a mind and love for accounting. In the early 1980’s she completed her degree in accounting and went on to own two successful businesses. During this time Nancy was an advocate of housing for the low income and sat on the Board of Directors for Monroe County Housing Solutions. Our social-minded financial manager was also instrumental in creating The Backstreet Missions, which provides housing and guidance for the homeless.
Nancy’s greatest accomplishment, however, is that she raised two intelligent, beautiful, and successful daughters. When not crunching numbers, Nancy enjoys traveling, hiking, cooking, gardening, and just spending time with friends and family.

This fall, Nancy plans to further her education while still working at The Pyramid Society. It is a complete pleasure to have Nancy as part of The Society’s team.
