KIDS’ KORNER!
GABRIELLA DAVIDSON -
Junior High Point Exhibitor
The Pyramid Society would like to recognize Gabriella Davidson for
her accomplishments at the 2006 Egyptian Event. Gabriella is a
newcomer to the Egyptian Event but not to horses or the show ring.
At the age of five, Gabriella took her first riding lesson at the
encouragement of her mother. By 2004, Gabriella’s parents had
purchased their first horse, a purebred Arabian named Japon.
Early in 2006, Gabriella’s trainer accepted a position in Texas with
Marilyn Hoffman, a long time member of The Pyramid Society and avid
Event exhibitor. It was suggested by the trainer that a former
student, Gabriella, ride Marilyn’s horses at the ’06 Event.
At the Event, Gabriella showed in Western Pleasure Novice Horse and
ATR/JTR, Hunter Pleasure Novice Horse and ATR/JTR, as well as
Amateur Halter Mares JTH. When the points were tabulated, Gabriella
had accumulated the highest number of points among all of the junior
exhibitors. In her first Event, Gabriella captured both the Amal
Burka Perpetual Trophy and the El Gohara+// Perpetual Trophy.
After experiencing a week at the Egyptian Event, Gabriella thought
that it was fun and especially enjoyed the Stallion Showcase. She
recommends that other juniors get involved and interact with one
another. As for future plans, Gabriella looks forward to eventually
becoming a trainer in both halter and performance and would be
delighted to again compete at the Event, if the opportunity presents
itself.

Are you currently making plans for the 2007 breeding season?
Egyptian Arabians not only make excellent breeding choices, but
through The Pyramid Society, they also offer huge financial
incentives. Just in time for the breeding season we offer two
programs that provide a wonderful introduction to the Egyptian
Arabian industry:
This year’s Egyptian Breeders’ Challenge (EBC) Auction broke all
previous records. The proceeds from this auction will fund
$80,000.00+ in prize money for the EBC classes of 2009! If you’ve
not already purchased a breeding at this year’s auction, don’t
worry...you still have a chance. Click on the link to access the
list of EBC breedings still available for the 2007 season and
contact The Society’s office for more details. The EBC—You’ve Got
To Be In It To Win It!

The Stallion Owner Participation Program is an incentive program,
whereby participating stallion owners offer to pay one-half of the
futurity nomination fee for mares bred to their stallions. Click on

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH AN
EGYPTIAN ARABIAN HORSE?
By Linda Dowling, Sahara Spirit Arabians, Bosque Farms, New
Mexico
Look into the soul of the horse, you will find the answer.
Several years ago, my elderly mother decided she wanted a quiet
horse to sit on and have as a companion, which she found in the
Egyptian Sired grey mare, Arrastarlet. Star had unfortunate
accidents as a foal, leaving her muzzle and nostrils damaged. But a
pretty face never guaranteed a beautiful heart. It soon became very
obvious that Star had more heart and love to give, so I started
looking around for an
appropriate
outlet for her tenderness. We are located in New Mexico, adjacent to
the Native American Isleta tribe. I had been receiving requests for
riding lessons from several tribal members, so I started using Star
as a lesson horse. Star loves riders of limited ability and
unpredictable behavior, preferring them to more expert riders.
After showing Star’s wonderful sensitive nature to the Tribal
Behavioral Health counselors, we decided to use her as the basis for
a therapeutic riding program. Sweet Star has a busy schedule,
usually serving 10 or more people a week, varying in age from
children to middle aged adults, each challenged by a disability
ranging from physical/mental limitations to anger management or
ADHD.
Sometimes Star’s clients just want to hold and pet her, other times
they wish to ride. Star is very clever and enjoys playing the
children’s game of “Red Light, Green Light”. She also plays
football, batting the ball with her head. While she plays these
entertaining games with her clients, they are also learning
listening skills, manual dexterity and self-control, all in a
non-judgmental environment.
In addition to working with special needs clients, Star performs at
charity events, and trains and competes in hunt seat, English trail,
and native costume classes. With Star’s busy schedule, I started
looking for a second horse to pick up the work loa d,
and as luck would have it, the lovely Egyptian sired TS Tahara Damis
came to us. Tahara had a horribly damaged foot and hoof. After
months of care by our expert vet, Dr. Donnie McDougall of Los Lunas
Animal Clinic, and clever farrier work, Tahara is sound. Sure
enough, she too has a caring nature. She is seen here as a companion
horse with cardiac patient Carol. When she is not caring for her
patients, she is working as a senior halter mare and dressage mount.
For more information on the work of the Sahara Spirit Arabians team
of rehabilitators, please contact John or Linda Dowling at
ssa@spinn.net or by phone at (505)

BOARD UPDATE |

MAJID ALSAYEGH ELECTED AS
NEWEST MEMBER OF THE BOARD
At the August board meeting, the Board of Directors elected The
Pyramid Society’s newest Board Member, Majid Alsayegh. Majid, who
was born and spent his youth in Iraq, now lives in Douglassville,
PA, and owns Al Majid Arabians. Majid has been a Pyramid Society
member since 1999 but purchased his first straight Egyptian in 1990.
Majid
is pictured here with his favorite horse, Imperial Safemaa (*Ibn
Safinaz x Negmaa), whom he finds particularly appealing for her
ethereal beauty, great athleticism, and interminable gentleness. She
reminds him of her grandsire, Ansata Ibn Halima, as she moves about
the pasture.
As a board
member, Majid would like to increase activities on a regional level
and raise the involvement of members in The Pyramid Society.
Additionally, he is looking forward to supporting the current
education effort in The Society as well as the use of straight
Egyptians in performance.
Mahatma Gandhi
one said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” and this,
Majid feels, is the motto which most closely represents his
perspective on life. When not spending time with his Egyptian
Arabians, Majid is deeply committed to nurturing the understanding
between people of different cultures. He works with the group
Intercultural Journey’s to use music and the arts to teach those in
conflict to be more tolerant of and compassionate towards those with
whom turmoil exists. Please help us welcome Majid Alsayegh as our
newest member of the Board of Directors.

NEW OFFICERS OF THE
BOARD
Jody Cruz’s term as Vice President ended in August 2006. However,
the Trustees elected him as their newest peer. Congratulations,
Jody, on a job well done! With Jody’s departure as Vice President,
however, it became necessary to elect a new one. Nancy Blankenship,
Secretary, was elected by the board to serve as the new Vice
President. M. Kent Mayfield, Ph.D. was then elected to replace Nancy
as the new Secretary of the Society.

PERFORMANCE HORSE
AWARD PROGRAM
At the August board meeting, the Board approved the concept
submitted by member Deb Charnuski of Canada, to promote, recognize
and encourage the participation of Egyptian and Egyptian Sired
Performance horses in approved competitions outside of the Egyptian

TEAM EGYPTIAN EYES WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP
“I truly believe that the Straight Egyptian horse, if competed in
sufficient numbers, could dominate the sport of endurance.” Back in
2000, Tommy Ticktin wrote these words to The Pyramid Society Board
in his request to start the Pyramid Challenge endurance ride. Now,
he plans to put this belief to the ultimate test. He has announced a
project, Team Egyptian, which will put together a team of six SE’s
and riders to train and compete over the next four years leading up
to the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington, KY. The ultimate
goal is have at least one of the horses named to the US National
Team and, from there, win the world championship.
Joining Tommy in this endeavor are
Martha Lucas, Trustee and former president, Anne-Louise Toner and
Majid Alsayegh, current board members, and Cia Reis, rider and
trainer. For those who might not recognize Cia, she is the 2003 Pan
American endurance champion. She also led the US to team silver at
the 2005 Pan Am championships and is a former US national champion.
Cia has owned and bred Straight Egyptians for 30 years.
The horses are the most critical
piece of the puzzle and Team Egyptian will be looking for the best
horses available – in particular, Straight Egyptian mares or
geldings in the range 5-8 years old. It is not necessary that the
horses be under saddle or have any endurance experience. Team
Egyptian will provide all the required training at one of three
locations in Florida, Pennsylvania or South Carolina.
At its most recent meeting, the Pyramid Society board voted to
endorse this project and Henry Metz, President, issued the following
statement:
"Enduro-America's Team Egyptian approach to winning the World
Endurance Championship with a Straight Egyptian horse is a
well-conceived project with the potential to have a positive impact
on the future of the Straight Egyptian. This project warrants the
support of the Straight Egyptian community."
Tommy feels, “The environment could not be better for this project.
We will have the best horse and the best rider. There is plenty of
time to prepare and the championship will be held in our own
backyard. The opportunity for success is there for us to grab.”
