THE 27TH
ANNUAL EGYPTIAN EVENT- A YEAR TO REMEMBER
From June 3-9, 2007, The Pyramid Society hosted the 27th Annual
Egyptian Event. Attendees from all over the world participated in
the activities and celebration that took place throughout the week.
This year, the Egyptian Event kicked off on Sunday with an Amateur
Halter Clinic led by professional handlers Mike Neal and Robin
Hopkinson. Attendees watched as 15 handlers participated with their
horses to glean advice on how to become better handlers. On Monday,
the audience watched as Larry Westmoreland on Amiin+/ demonstrated
Working Cow Horse and Team Penning in the covered arena.
Special thanks to Pyramid Society members, CP Arabians of
Lawrenceburg, KY for providing the cattle for this demonstration. Later on in
the week the audience would see this incredibly talented Straight
Egyptian stallion receive his Legion of Excellence award. In the
Patrons’ Lounge, another group was engaged as Dr. John Shelle
discussed “Hereditary Conformational Indicators in Arabian
Breeding.” These two seminars were followed by afternoon and evening
sessions of classes that ended with the exciting Liberty Class
preliminaries. Tuesday morning’s Welcome Breakfast, proudly
sponsored by Pamela Onusko of Apex Arabians, Milford, DE, brought
new members and international guests together for a Southern-style
breakfast at the elegant Spindletop Hall to discuss their favorite
topic - Egyptian Arabian horses. Other attendees enjoyed a
demonstration on driving with Cindy Stylianos and her Egyptian-Sired
stallion, Ali Cristos. The Pyramid Society would like to
thank Tarter Gates, for providing the gates for the Working Arabian
demonstrations on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday morning started with an excellent
seminar on “Breeding Farm Disasters: Dealing with EHV-1 Abortion and
Paralysis” presented by Josh Slater, BVM&S, Ph.D., DECEIM, MRCVS,
and President of the British Equine Veterinary Association. After a
morning and afternoon full of classes, The Pyramid Society hosted
its annual membership meeting and social for members and guests that
highlighted the different activities and programs available to
Society members. Following the social was the ever-popular Stallion
Showcase presentation, featuring some of the worlds’ finest Straight
Egyptian stallions. These stallions were presented again on Saturday
morning, where visitors were enthralled by the opportunity of
visiting these handsome steeds up close.
Thursday was an eventful day with a repeat of Dr. Josh Slater’s
seminar. Following the afternoon class session, the Jewels of the
Nile Private Treaty sale horses were previewed, followed by an
evening filled with barn parties. From Cajun to Middle-Eastern
cuisine, the savored aromas wafted through the air and, along with
the laughter, permeated the grounds during this ever-enjoyable time
of the Event. Friday began with a seminar of “The Babson Influence”
celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Babson Importation. The
afternoon session was kicked off with a bit of light-heartedness as
the Flying K9’s entertained attendees with their Frisbee-catching
abilities. Then it was down to serious business for the futurity
finals and their grand pay-outs exceeding $65,000.00. The new
“Kalkata” even provided non-owners the chance to get in the action
as they were able to bet on who they thought would win the
two-year-old Straight futurities. The “California Syndicate”,
immediately became champions of this fun-filled activity as they won
both pots and took home handsome checks for their small investment.
The “In the Pink” Gala and Live Art Auction rounded out Friday’s
activities. This fun and fund-raising evening was enjoyed by over
440 attendees from all around the globe who came together to
socialize as well as to bid on beautiful art by some of the worlds’
foremost equine artists. Henry Metz, President of The Pyramid
Society would also use this forum to recognize new Life Members of
The Pyramid Society, Drs. Margaret & Scott Acker of Die Burg Acker
Egyptian Arabians, Pinson, Al., Ed & Merrie Aiken of Cedar Ridge
Farm Egyptian Arabians, Las Vegas, NV, Ahmad Amer of Yorklyn
Arabians in Hockessin, De., and Gary, Wanda, Matt & Misty Kenworthy
of Paradise Arabians, Dalton, Ga. Pyramid Society Trustees honored
Barbara Griffith of the famed Imperial Egyptian Stud for her
devotion and dedication to the Egyptian Arabain horse. The crowd
became even more emotional, witnessing the video recap of Imperial’s
long and stellar history.
Saturday started early with the Endurance Ride getting off to an
exciting start, as over 60 competitiors vied for top honors in the
25 and 50 mile endurance rides. Later on the day the Egyptian
Breeders’ Challenge Live Auction would break all records - with the
end result being a pay-out exceeding $110,000.00 for the 2010 EBC
classes. Saturday evening’s Opening Ceremonies left the crowd
mesmerized as they were vicariously transplanted to the desert where
they witnessed the importance and tradition of the falcon, the
Saluki, the camel as well as the Egyptian Arabian horse on the
everyday lives of the Bedouins. Excitement continued to mount as the
numerous champions were pinned on Saturday evening – drawing to a
